National Left Hander’s Day is coming up on August 13, so in honor of the holiday, we gathered a list of 10 successful, left handed entrepreneurs. These surprising southpaws managed to make it big without smudging ink all over important documents when writing with an ink pen, and (from a fellow left hander) that’s no easy feat.
Here they are: 10 successful left handed entrepreneurs!
10 Left Handed Entrepreneurs
1. Richard Branson
Founder and CEO of Virgin and a long list of successful businesses, Richard Branson is left handed. He started his first company at the age of 15 – a publication called Student Magazine. He went on to become one of the most famous and wealthy entrepreneurs of our time.
2. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have been entrepreneurs since childhood. A series of straight-to-video shows and movies, books, retail products, and clothing have made the twin sisters successful entrepreneurs for more than 20 years. It’s estimated that they’re worth over $350 million.
3. Bill Gates
Bill Gates is the CEO and Co-Founder of Microsoft with partner Paul Allen. He’s also left handed. Bill Gates is one of the most successful left handed entrepreneurs of our time, having a large part in the creation of the first PC and bringing advanced technology into average American homes.
4. Walt Disney
It’s unsubstantiated, but many say that Walt Disney was left handed. One report says Walt Disney drew with his right hand and wrote with his left. He was certainly a creative and innovative man, something other left handers seem to have in common. Did you know that Disney characters Mulan and Princess Tiana are both left handed?
5. Mark Zuckerberg
The Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is a well known man. Many don’t know that he’s left handed, but he proudly calls himself a “southpaw.”
6. Oprah Winfrey
Oprah is a famous entrepreneur, TV host, producer, and philanthropist. Oprah is the chairman of Harpo, Inc. and is one of very few self made women billionaires. Her estimated net worth is around $3 billion.
7. M.C. Escher
M.C. Escher, famous illustrator that bent and warped the lines of perception, was (not surprisingly) left handed as well. On the right you can see a sample of Escher’s iconic work – difficult to visually ‘figure out’ and so intriguing.
In fact, his work had an unseen mathematic element at work: “Escher was embraced by mathematicians and scientists, as much of his heavily researched, precise output embodied or explored concepts around geometry, logic, space and infinity.”
8. Henry Ford
The Founder of the Ford Motor Company and the (forgive the pun) driving force of putting automobiles in every Americans’ driveway, Henry Ford was a southpaw. He was famous for innovation – he is quoted as saying “If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.”
9. David Rockefeller
David Rockefeller, the grandson of John D. Rockefeller, noted entrepreneur and philanthropist, was left handed. In the image on the right, you can see a pen positioned in his left hand as he signs a document. Several members of the wealthy Rockefeller family were left handed, including John D. and Nelson Rockefeller.
10. John D. Rockefeller
The original patriarch of the Rockefeller family and the creator of the Rockefeller fortune, John D. Rockefeller was one of the most successful left handed entrepreneurs of all time.
“His balance upon his death in 1937 stood at US$1.4 billion (equivalent to $23 billion in 2015 dollars). At the time, his fortune accounted for more than 1.5% of the national economy, equivalent to $253 billion in 2013. His peak net worth was estimated at $336 billion (in 2007 USD; inflation-adjusted) in 1913, at 74 years of age. He is considered to be the richest American of all time by virtually every source, and—largely—the richest person in modern history.” – Wikipedia, John D. Rockefeller page
