When you learn to practice methods for increased relaxation and decreased stress, your whole life becomes more efficient, productive and happier. There are techniques you can learn to zap stress quickly so that the rest of your life doesn’t seem so overwhelming.
When you are a business owner, learning to take the time to breathe, talk to others and meditate may be exactly what takes your day from stressful and overwhelming to manageable. In no time at all, you can find yourself zapping away the stress, relaxing your body and getting refocused on your tasks. You don’t need a whole weekend away at a retreat or a spa; just 15 minutes to relax with one of these five techniques should do the trick.
Music and Laughter
Did you know that listening to soothing music can lower anxiety, heart rate and blood pressure? Take some time to make a playlist of songs, nature sounds or instruments that you can play when you start to get stressed out.
Sometimes even the sound of birds chirping, the ocean or an instrumental track can help you blow off steam. Consider upbeat songs that you can sing at the top of your lungs to brighten your mood.
Speaking of making some noise, laughter can really help with stress. It not only will calm you down mentally but it will decrease your body’s stress hormone, cortisol, and it will boost endorphins. Consider playing a video or watching your favorite sitcom if there isn’t anyone nearby to laugh with.
Sometimes all you need is a 15 minute walk. Some people like to run to get a runner’s high, but you can also take a walk during your lunch break for the same effect. It can help with depression and anxiety, since exercise releases feel-good chemicals that help deal with stress. Or if walking isn’t your thing, try a yoga class.
Yoga can also lead to meditating, which is another technique for combating stress. A few minutes of meditating can alter your brain’s neural pathways and make you more resilient to stress. Sit up straight with both feet on the floor, close your eyes and recite a positive mantra that will encourage you.
Placing a hand on your belly to sync up your words with your breaths can help too. If you don’t want to meditate, just take 5 minutes where you can focus on your breathing by inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. It will help lower your blood pressure and slow your heart rate.
Connect with Others
Sometimes just talking with others in your social network is all it takes to relieve stress. This can be a great way to get a laugh in too. Make a phone call or meet someone for lunch to get a fresh perspective.
Sometimes you just need to remember the things you are grateful for. Try a gratitude journal to help you remember what you appreciate in your life. Remembering these blessings can cancel out negativity, worry and anxiety. Even if you are just thankful for a sunny day, the coffee you drank this morning or that you received a paycheck this week, be grateful for things that not everyone else gets to enjoy.
Zap stress during your day by using these tips that can be accomplished in under an hour.
