6 Fun, Unique Ways to Spend Your Weekend
Outdoor improvements around your home
If you’re just not the gardening type, you could buy small plants in containers to hang and place around your deck, porch, patio, or door. Maybe you’ve been meaning to sand and re-stain the deck – now’s the perfect time! Buy some new patio furniture or paving stones for a walkway. No matter how small the area, there’s always something you can do to spruce it up and make it look more inviting.
Trimming overgrown hedges and trees around the property cleans up the overall appearance of the yard and pulling weeds from flower beds or landscaped areas makes a big difference, too. You don’t have to spend the entire weekend slaving away outside – just take it slow and commit to getting at least one major outdoor task accomplished this weekend.
Home renovations or rearranging
If you need to make some improvements or repairs to your home, the weekend is the perfect time to do it! Even a simple rearranging of furniture and wall hangings can update the look of your home and give you a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
Tackle that small home renovation project you’ve been meaning to do – and don’t hesitate to call some friends or family over to help you with the project! Offer refreshments and food, and your weekend is looking even better.
If it’s possible, take a short weekend trip to a nearby destination (or fly if you can find cheap round-trip tickets!). Do a little research online before you make the plans to go to ensure there will be plenty of activities, events, restaurants, and accommodations that you’ll enjoy in the area.
If you plan to drive, make sure you have the car checked out before you depart to ensure you don’t have to end your trip on a sudden, sour note.
Volunteer with local organizations
If you want to spend your weekend in a truly fulfilling way, volunteer with local organizations. Check around and ask friends, family members, and coworkers – many people are directly involved with volunteering themselves or can at least point you in the direction of places and programs that need volunteers.
Look at your local Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, churches, Habitat for Humanity, hospitals, animal shelters and more for volunteer opportunities.
Get on the water
Renting a pontoon boat, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, or even taking a guided trip on the lake or ocean can be an adventurous, exciting way to spend your weekend. If there is water nearby, find the way you’d like to explore it and rent the equipment you’ll need. Spending the weekend on the water will leave you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and a little more care-free.
It can be lots of fun to act like a tourist in your own town! Some ideas of fun things to do in your area: Visit a berry or fruit picking farm, take a historic walking tour, find out-of-the-way antique shops and thrift stores, walk around the town square/downtown area, restaurant-hop your way through town, pose with landmarks for photos, go to the farmer’s market, etc. You’ll discover things about your town that you didn’t know and see it with a new perspective.
