Does your virtual receptionist provider have a structured price increase scheduled annually?
If so, it’s time to start searching for a new provider. Pricing is the most important facet of virtual receptionist services for many companies, and being able to plan ahead and budget for a service is absolutely essential to stay on track.
How can you do that if your virtual receptionist provider is raising prices annually? The simple answer is that you can’t. That’s why raising prices annually is a virtual receptionist provider red flag, and one that you literally can’t afford to ignore.
Ruby Receptionists is Raising Prices Annually
Some providers schedule annual price increases of a certain percentage – one of the most common services, Ruby Receptionists, implements a scheduled price increase each year. That drives otherwise satisfied clients away in droves. How do we know? Many of those disillusioned clients find their way to us after jumping ship.
Ruby Receptionists: The Annual Price Increase
Ruby has increased their prices by 23% (Plan A, 100 minutes/month) to 41% (Plan C, 500 minutes/month) since 2011 while offering the same amount of minutes and coverage.
Note: In addition to the monthly fee listed, Ruby also charges a one-time $95 setup fee for all clients.
(2017) Prices range from $259-$989/month
(2016) Prices ranged from $259-$899/month
(2015) Prices ranged from $249-$819/month
(2014) Prices ranged from $239-$799 month
(2013) Prices ranged from $229-$769/month
(2012) Prices ranged from $219-$739/month
(2011) Prices ranged from $209-$699/month

As you can see, Ruby’s Plan A prices increased by a predictable $10 annually, while Plan C prices increased by anywhere from $20-90 annually.
How do customers react to annual price increases?
When a virtual receptionist company schedules an annual price increase while providing the same amount and type of service, customers react. Many consider it an unfair practice and leave negative reviews in efforts to show the company that the price increases are driving customers away.
Comments like these are all over the internet:
“The negative is the price. They are very expensive and prices increase each year, especially compared to comparable services. Even though we have been very happy with Ruby, the price often has us looking at other services. Sadly, because of the cost I think we will be switching eventually.”
“I have been happy with Ruby Receptionists except for the fact that every year they do a 10% price increase. It is no longer to $409 stated above. I was just notified they are now increasing from the $449 (in May of 2015 when I started it was $409) and will now be $489 plus 2.45 per minute above. I always go over. They are chatty with my customers but I liked that about them but not at these prices. It’s really getting to be too expensive. Perhaps they should consider paying less for national advertising to get new clients and work on maintaining the ones they have.”
“I have to agree with what Andrea said in the previous post. I’ve been a Ruby customer for a year or so and steadily the prices have increased. The service quality is all pooled so my callers don’t get a level of consistency.”
“I have been working with Call Ruby for several years and initially they were great: I never went over my monthly allowance, calls were responded to quickly and questions were answered thoroughly. Over time, plan prices have increased substantially and the call quality has gone down considerably. Questions that used to be handled using the FAQ section for free are now not dealt with initially – so that I have to request a callback from Ruby, which is an additional per-minute charge.
Most disturbing – it seems that Ruby staff stay on the call for longer than is necessary – I have gone over my monthly allowance by several hundred dollars multiple times. My call log shows that staff are staying on calls for 15-30 minutes at a time. When I have complained to Ruby about this, they credited my account – for $25 – but have not worked to remedy the issue.”
This is just a sample of the clients that have been disappointed and inconvenienced by raising prices annually at other virtual receptionist providers – do a quick Google search of your own to find more.
