Did you know that your desk actually represents your personality well? It sends a message to the world that you may either be proud or potentially embarrassed by. What is on your desk and what it looks like can send unintended messages to the world such as how creative you are, how extroverted you are or in some cases, how much you’d prefer to be somewhere else.
Having a personal photo at your desk is a nice symbol of your life outside of the office but excessive vacation pictures, unread papers that are piling up and a vision board may make your staff or customers think your mind is truly somewhere else. You can make a good impression with your desk or send off subliminal messages to those around you when you leave it cluttered or full of too many personal items. Here is a look at what your desk is telling the world that you may not have realized.
Is there any possibility that you could be a bit of a hoarder? You may announce proudly that you keep everything or you may be embarrassed that you are the only person you know that can never throw anything away. Hoarders have a desk with the highest stack of papers, overstuffed drawers and way too much clutter at their desk.
This type of desk can really distract you from current problems as you are mentally, and physically, bogged down by too much useless stuff. These types of people are telling the world they will take on more tasks than they should and they tend to get involved in everything.
The one that would rather be elsewhere
You may not realize your desk is telling the world that you’d rather be on the beach than working at this office. Your desk full of vacation photos and personal momentos scream “I’d rather plan my next vacation than work on this week’s business meeting.” Make sure to limit your personal items to an appropriate number of photos or items and take off personal projects off your corkboard.
Way too little on the desk
If you are a person with way too little on your desk, you may think you exude a lack of willingness to be cluttered and hoard. This may seem like a positive position to take but in reality, you may be sending a message that you are not interested in settling in to this job. You may appear ready to jump ship at any time and maybe even looking to do so. You will seem more approachable with a nice item or two on your desk, a personal photograph or some simple flowers or candy bowl.
Creative types will be easy to spot because their desks have unusual objects or be located in unusual spaces. If you keep original art or unique items at your desk, you will be perceived as creative and innovative. These people also prefer openness whether that’s through the objects on their desk, the ability to offer new ideas or the way they set up their workspace.
The people in the office that tend to leave their door open and seem inviting are clearly extroverted and social people. These people do really well because they create a friendly environment, socialize with others and appear inviting. This makes it easier to score promotions and new opportunities.
Look at your desk to decide if it’s sending a message that you didn’t intend, whether it’s positive or negative. Do you have a desk similar to one of these that is giving off the wrong impression? Clean up, personalize and open the door to make sure your staff and customers know you are reliable, friendly and ready to work.
